Microsoft will cease to provide technical assistance or feature / security updates to Windows 10 operating systems beyond the Windows 10 End-of-Support deadline of 14 October 2025. From this point, devices will be at a greater risk for virus and malware attack.
This is no different to the transition from earlier Windows operating systems such as Windows 7 and Windows XP. However, transition to Windows 11 has been much more difficult then earlier OS moves, given the minimum system requirements (including TPM 2.0) and legacy program incompatibility. As with all unpatched software, and the increasing risk of AI in hacking, the vulnerabilities will increase over time. Internet browsing and working with older applications become “glitchy” – lack of support for emerging issues is usually a motivation for users to upgrade or purchase a new system.
Extended Security Update Programme for Businesses
With millions of users still using Windows 10, Microsoft has had to make some compromises to encourage customers to upgrade. They are offering Businesses a paid subscription to keep receiving critical security updates once support for Windows 10 officially ends.
